Local Merchant Opens Makeshift Pantry

While her consignment store is closed due to the state mandate regarding nonessential businesses, Wendy Sheetz, owner of Stuff 4 Everyone, has set up a makeshift food pantry in front of the store, located at 343 W. Main St., Birdsboro. A sign on the cart of food states, "Take what you need; give what you can."

The food pantry is available Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Among the items offered are canned vegetables and soups, crackers, desserts and snacks.

Sheetz said she opened the makeshift food pantry in March as an effort to help others during the coronavirus outbreak. "I cleared my pantry and I went grocery shopping, and I started it," she said. "(The food) is on a three-tiered rolling shelf we happened to have. When they told me I could not open (my business as part of the mandate), I put it outside. I don't judge; people can pick what they want."

While the food is available during limited hours, Sheetz will accept food donations at any time outdoors under the enclosed storefront. She will also arrange to pick up large quantities from those who would like to donate.

She said that items that are most desired are make-at-home meals. "Snack foods don't go as much," Sheetz stated. "The box meals or canned meals go really quick, like soup starters, SpaghettiOs, Hamburger Helper, noodles and mac and cheese. Any type of (beverage) is good, like apple juice and bottled flavored waters."

Also needed are cereal and peanut butter, as well as pasta and sauce. "People have been bringing food, but not as fast as people are taking it," Sheetz noted. "It's very depleted now. We are seeking donations."

Sheetz has a history of helping others in need. She volunteers at the Clothing Closet at the Birdsboro Church of the Nazarene and in the past has delivered Meals on Wheels. "I partner with the Clothing Closet. (At the store) we take donations for them of toiletries like shampoo," said Sheetz. "I've done toy drives and canned food drives. It's just in my nature to always be doing that. I want to help more people."

Stuff 4 Everyone, which offers a variety of items, such as home decor, furniture and toys, is located across the street from the Birdsboro Post Office.
