The York County Food Bank and its partner agencies have worked diligently since mid-March to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The food bank will host pop-up distributions from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. as follows: Thursday, June 18, at Red Lion Area Senior High School, 200 Horace Mann Ave., Red Lion; Saturday, June 20, at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville; and Saturday, June 27, tentatively at Spring Grove Area High School, 1490 Roths Church Road, Spring Grove.
Additionally, the food bank has hosted weekly drive-through distributions at its new East York Emergency Food Hub and walk-through distributions at its Princess Street location on Tuesdays for several weeks.
As of June 2, its weekly distributions have new hours. As businesses begin to reopen and York County residents return to work, the food bank hopes to accommodate the needs of those who may be working later in the day by pushing the timeframe of its distributions back by one hour.
Anyone struggling to afford food is encouraged to visit one of the the food bank's distributions during the new hours. Drive-through distributions will take place on Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. at 1094 Haines Road, York. Walk-through distributions will take place on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at 254 W. Princess St., York.
Neither identification nor documentation is not required. If able, participants are asked that only one person per household attend the event for health and safety reasons. The food bank also requests that participants ensure that their trunks are cleared out so that volunteers can load food with minimal interaction.
Additionally, grab-and-go fresh produce and milk distributions will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays through the end of June at the Haines Road location.
Along with having new hours, the food bank is also offering a number of new food items to those attending its distributions. Thanks to Operation BBQ Relief and the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, the food bank can now provide those in need with trays of ready-made meals as well as boxes of fresh produce and dairy.
The food bank welcomes financial donations so that it can continue to purchase food and necessary supplies. The food bank is also in need of healthy volunteers. To learn more about volunteer needs or register for a volunteer shift, readers may visit https://yorkfoodbank.org/.
