Scouts Earn Eagle Rank

At the beginning of 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ended its affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and replaced the BSA Eagle Scout Program with the Children and Youth Program. Prior to the deadline, young men in the local area received their Eagle Scout rank from the BSA and The Church of Jesus Christ.

Three Scouts from the Shrewsbury Ward achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. They are Spencer Bowman, Derek Brown, and Nathaniel Ward. Bowman, 17, is the son of Troy and Monica Bowman of Jacobus Borough. He built two benches for the parking lot and walking trail in Jacobus off Valley Road for his Eagle Scout project. Brown, 14, is the son of Kevin and Lisa Brown of Springfield Township. He organized the youth conference service project for the Lancaster Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and put together hygiene kits for the Lebanon VA Hospital, activity kits for the Pediatric Center at York Hospital, and care packages for service members deployed in Afghanistan. Ward, 17, is the son of Monte and Jennifer Ward of Springfield Township and conducted a basketball clinic for youths in Dallastown Area School District as his Eagle Scout project.

Eagle Scout ranks were achieved by six teenagers in the West York Ward. They are Cyrus Fryar, 14, son of Ry and Victoria Fryar of Spring Garden Township, who did work on the solar charging station at Elmwood Park; Hyrum Graver, 15, son of Dr. Joseph and Tara Graver of Manchester Township, who cleared debris from the old horseshoe pits at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry and created new ones; Jeffery Ohl, 17, son of Jeffery and Daphne Ohl of York, who held a baby products drive for the Woman's Pregnancy Center and did landscaping for the center; Staheli Palmer, 15, the son of Nathan and Rachel Palmer of West Manchester Township, who replaced a set of old horseshoe pits at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry; Levi Phillips, 15, son of Brandon and Amelia Phillips of York Township, who rerouted approximately 150 yards of the geology trail at Richard Nixon County Park; and Byron Seidel, 14, son of Joe and Amber Seidel of West York, who oversaw the unified efforts of the community and the York City's Parks and Recreational Bureau to create a science center at Westminister Park in York.

Jonah Rodriguez of York, a member of the York Ward, received his Eagle Scout rank in 2019.
