In response to Berks County's transition to the yellow phase of the governor's reopening plan, Berks County Public Libraries locations, including the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, have begun offering curbside pickup service to patrons.
Limited curbside pickup began on June 15 by appointment only at the Boone Area Library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro. Patrons can call the library at 610-582-5666 or visit http://www.berkslibraries.org/branch/boone to request items.
"Once someone requests an item by phone or online, we will gather the items, call the patrons and pick a time frame for them to come - what day and what hours - and we will have it ready," explained Sarah Terry, youth services coordinator for the Boone Area Library. "On that day and time, they will come in through the side door; we will have signs directing patrons where to go. They tell us their name, and we put a bag on a table, and they grab the bag and off they go."
Parents with children who would like to take part in this year's Summer Reading Program, "Imagine Your Story," can also contact the library to arrange pickup of the reading packet, which includes an activity log.
"They get a prize just for coming in to pick up the paperwork," said Terry. "All the directions will be on the log. When they're done, they will check off which (gift) baskets they would like to win." Packets must be turned in by Saturday, Aug. 8, and winners of the gift baskets will be chosen through a random drawing. Photos of the baskets can be viewed at http://www.facebook.com/boonearealibrary.
Terry pointed out that all summer reading activities this year will be virtual. An upcoming program will be a virtual painting party for children age 5 and up. On Monday, June 22, at 6 p.m., children can pick up their painting supplies from the Nettie Prices Sparkling Art Mobile, which will be stationed at the library between 6 and 7 p.m. "She will pass out some art kits, and that Wednesday, June 24, she will host a live painting demonstration," noted Terry. "Whoever picks up the bag can participate. "
Events for teenagers will be offered virtually at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, and Tuesday, July 28, by the Yocum Institute For Arts Education. The program on June 25 will be "Destress With Art," and the program on July 28 will be "Not Perfect Playtime," which will include improv and theater games. To register teenagers may email sbichild@berks.lib.pa.us.
In addition, Terry offers Zoom story times every Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. at http://www.facebook.com/boonearealibrary.
"We are also going to be offering grab-and-go craft kits throughout the summer. Dates will be posted on Facebook," Terry added.
Digital library service remains available to all county residents with a Berks County Public Libraries card. Berks County residents without a card can apply at https://catalog.berkslibraries.org/polaris/logon.aspx or register for an Instant Digital Card at http://www.berkslibraries.org/instant-digital-card through Tuesday, June 30.
