Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, in conjunction with the Library System of Lancaster County, encourages families to take part in the annual Summer Reading Program. The theme of this year's collaborative reading program is "Imagine Your Story," and for the first time, the challenge will be provided online. The program began on June 20 and will run through Saturday, Aug. 15.
Readers of all ages across Lancaster County can log their reading, do fun activities, and earn badges and prizes. Program components include four reading levels: Read Aloud for children birth to age 4, Elementary for children ages 5 to 9, Tween for youths ages 10 to 12, and Teen for those ages 13 to 19. Printable reading logs and virtual event listings will be available at https://mslibrary.org/summer-reading-program/.
Activities will include live Zoom events for a Girl Scouts Go STEAM Spectacular, Giant Mini-Chefs, Phredd Ukulele One-Man Band, Ryan the Bug Man, Jesse's Reptile Show, and Tammi the Drummer. The library will also provide videos of the Hank the Health Hero puppet from CHI St. Joseph Children's Health, and Lancaster Parks and Recreation will provide the video "Growing a Beanstalk." Miss Jan will continue to offer virtual weekly story times and other activities that can be viewed on social media or at http://www.mslibrary.org. Updates to programs and other Summer Reading Program information will be provided on the aforementioned website and on social media.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on local businesses, prizes earned for completed summer reading logs, including coupons, passes, tickets and/or vouchers, are subject to change. Information regarding the pick-up/delivery of prizes from the Summer Reading Program will be available after Wednesday, July 1. For more information after that date, readers may check the aforementioned website.
The library invites adults to take a literary trip across America with a summer reading activity. Imagine Your Story ... Across the USA is a reading game that asks the reader to choose books set in specific states or written by authors from specific states. Participants can create a travel route across the country to the site of a virtual vacation or pick states they have always wanted to visit.
When at least five books have been read, participants may email the completed game card to kbeach@mountjoy.lib.pa.us. There is no limit to the number of game cards participants may enter. The library has provided a game card and reading lists at https://mslibrary.org/adult-summer-reading/. The adult summer reading game began on June 20 and will end on Monday, Aug. 31. Entries received each week will be entered into that week's prize drawing. On Tuesday, Sept. 1, a grand prize winner will be chosen from all submitted entries.
