The York County Prothonotary held four outdoor naturalization ceremonies in May. The ceremonies were held on May 14, 19, 21, and 27 on the steps of the York County Administrative Building in downtown York.
The outdoor ceremonies allowed new citizens to be naturalized after their ceremony was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A naturalization ceremony is considered a court proceeding, so new citizens were not violating the state's stay-at-home order to attend.
A naturalization ceremony is a venue to recognize the rights, responsibilities, and importance of citizenship and provide access to services for new citizens. The naturalization ceremony is the culmination of years of working toward American citizenship.
