The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) has awarded $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in the Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Penn Manor school districts.
The scholarships are awarded annually to students who will pursue a career in business through postsecondary education or by starting their own business. The Solanco scholarship recipients are Caroline Arrowsmith and Nathanael Nuehauser of Solanco, Ethan Cramer of Lampeter-Strasburg, and Jordan Stum of Penn Manor.
Caroline will attend Penn State University at University Park to major in animal science. Nathanael will attend the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. Ethan will major in mechanical engineering technology at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Jordan has been accepted at several colleges and universities and will pursue a bachelor's and master's degree in clinical mental health counseling.
The scholarship presented to Nathanael was in honor of Steve Risk, the recipient of the SLCCC Community Service Award. Risk, retired president of Risk Construction, served for 20 years as a Solanco school board member, is a founding member of Southern End Community Association, and is a high school football official.
The SLCCC obtains funding for its scholarships through its annual shredding event held the first Friday in June. The 2020 shredding event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event will be held again in 2021. Local businesses, organizations and residents are invited to bring their sensitive and confidential paper-based materials for shredding. All shredded material is recycled. Donations are encouraged and are used by the SLCCC to fund the annual college scholarships.
