Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia, has posted its upcoming programs.
There are several ways to register children for reading logs for the Summer Reading Program. For paper logs, participants may stop by the library during open hours. Readers may also visit https://lancasterlibraries.org/beanstack/ and choose "Register an Individual or a Family." Mobile app users can download the mobile app Beanstack Tracker and follow the steps by visiting https://lancasterlibraries.org/help-beanstack-mobile-app/.
Children who read the required number of minutes and/or complete the activities on their log will receive coupons to local businesses.
Additionally, details on the Summer Fitness Quest are available at https://columbiapubliclibrary.org/summer-fitness-quest/. Participants who complete the Summer Fitness Quest will receive a medal and will be entered to win a gift card to a grocery store.
Following the retirement of Sam Edmond, the library has a new desk assistant, Renee Christiansen, during the afternoon and evening. Christiansen started her career in Connecticut and has worked at both public and school libraries.
Most Summer Reading programming has been via Zoom sessions. However, Phredd McNaughton has offered his personalized video concert for Columbia patrons throughout the summer. To view the concert, readers may search for the Columbia Public Library's channel on YouTube.
Readers may visit http://www.facebook.com/hankthehealthhero for online story times and videos with Hank the Health Hero throughout the summer. Readers may also search for "Healthy at Home With Giant's Nutritionists" on YouTube for recipes such as Kilene's Popsicle Smoothies and Summertime Trail Mix.
Library staff would like to begin offering some outdoor story times under the trees in the adjacent park. Attendees would be asked to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Story times are tentatively planned for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7. Evening times will also be considered. Interested families may contact info@columbiapubliclibrary.org. Attendees will asked to observe social distancing during the story times.
Three public computers are available, and patrons are required to call the library at 717-684-2255 for appointments beginning at 10 a.m. each day. Appointments must be for same day. Each computer user is limited to one hour per day, and computers stations are able to accommodate one individual only due to social distancing requirements. To ensure safety of all, the computers will not be available for 30 minutes between each appointment to allow time for sanitizing and disinfecting. All library patrons and computer users are required to wear masks.
Book Bingo for Grown-ups will be offered in the future, as well as virtual Zoom reading sessions with the library's reading therapy dogs.
