Household Waste Collection Program Slated

The York County Solid Waste Authority's (YCSWA) free residential household hazardous waste (HHW) collection program is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YCSWA's Ash Recycling and Processing Facility, 2650 Blackbridge Road, York. All participants must remain in their vehicles, wear a mask, and place all HHW materials in the trunk or bed of the vehicle prior to admittance. HHW materials should not be placed in the back seat of the vehicle.

Due to COVID-19 and the state's mandate to keep group gatherings to no more than 250 people, residents must preregister for the event. Preregistration is available by visiting http://www.ycswa.com/hhw-event-2020/. If residents are unable to register online, they may register by calling the YCSWA directly at 717-845-1066.

Residents who are unable to make it to the Oct. 3 event may dispose of their HHW in their regular garbage. Under state regulation, residential households are exempt from state hazardous waste regulations and may dispose of household hazardous waste in their regular garbage. Because York County uses waste-to-energy technology to manage municipal solid waste, waste is combusted at a high temperature in enclosed, environmentally controlled combustion units, and emissions are managed via advanced emissions technology.

HHW includes any products from the home that are corrosive (drain cleaners or bleach), flammable (gasoline), reactive (chemistry kits), or toxic (pesticides). The program benefits York County by identifying hazardous wastes found in the home and providing an opportunity to manage these materials in a safe and efficient manner.

All York County homeowners or residential tenants are eligible to bring their household hazardous waste to the collection site. There is no fee to participate. Business and government entities are not eligible to participate.

The program is made possible by funding generated from tipping fees collected at the York County Resource Recovery Center and a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. After collection, a licensed hazardous waste commercial hauler hired by the YCSWA will transport the materials to permitted hazardous waste sites. These facilities will recycle the materials collected.
