The Dauphin County Library System will launch two new book clubs for tweens and teens this fall. Members will meet every Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Zoom to discuss their favorite books. Both book clubs are free and open to the public.
Tweens, those ages 11 to 13, are invited to join the Build Your Own Book Club, where discussions will focus on members' favorite books. There is no assigned reading in this book club, but each week will feature a new genre, theme, or character and will cover everything from graphic novels to science fiction. Members will choose a book that fits the week's theme and then share their thoughts.
Teens, those ages 14 to 17, are encouraged to join the Banned Books Club, where banned books are the only required reading. Each week will feature a discussion about books that have been banned or challenged in the past 10 years and the reasons why people have tried to get these books off the shelves.
Registration is required by visiting http://www.dcls.org/events or calling 717-234-4961 and selecting option 6. Registrants will receive an email containing a Zoom link, the password, and further instructions prior to the discussion. A Google Classroom invitation will also be shared with registrants; this will be used to share additional weekly information.
In addition, the Dauphin County Library System is celebrating Library Card Sign Up Month this September with a card registration drive. Individuals may sign up for a library card at http://www.dcls.org/newcard and get free access to e-books, e-audiobooks, and music; Book Advisor; curbside pickup, e-resources, School Tools, and Ask a Librarian; virtual programs; and use of the community meeting rooms for up to 10 people.
Library cards also provide free internet access and Wi-Fi, provide use of public computers and laptops, and allow patrons to borrow books, movies, music, magazines, games, and more. Anyone can become a member by completing the form online or by stopping by a local library. To learn more about the benefits of becoming a member of the library system, readers may explore http://www.dcls.org or visit their local library.
