Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation has posted its upcoming programs. Unless noted otherwise, all programs will take place in the Environmental Center at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. There is a fee for most programs. Nut Hunt, for people of all ages, will be offered by naturalist Lisa J. Sanchez from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. Participants will examine the different species of nut-producing trees and explore their unique characteristics.
Cardboard Craze, for people of all ages, will take place on Oct. 3 from 1 to 2 p.m. Attendees will learn ways to upcycle cardboard with naturalist Rachel Albright.
Homeschool Wednesday: Introduction to Orienteering, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Garden of 5 Senses Patio. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will assist as students extend compass skills and put map and compass together in the sport of orienteering. After covering basics and a practice control point, students will cover short orienteering courses in small groups. They should dress for outdoor activity. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
Homeschool Wednesday: Introduction to GPS, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place on Oct. 7 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Schlegel will lead students in the use of handheld GPS units. After an introduction to the concept and the units, students will practice locating geocaches They should dress for outdoor activity. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
Thursday in the Park: Weather Watch, for children ages 6 to 9, will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will join Schlegel for a series of outdoor-oriented fall season classes. Attendees will look at the big picture and the local weather as apparent in the day's conditions, and attendees should dress for the weather. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
Putting Nature Into Words No. 2, for people age 15 and up, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The class may be taken as a stand-alone event or as the second part of the three-class mini-course. Naturalist Alan Wissinger will briefly cover theme, voice, simile versus metaphor, and using verbal phrases. Attendees should bring a towel to sit on, writing tools, and a notebook for a period of outdoor writing before reading their work to others.
A Fall Trivia Hike, geared for children ages 4 to 10, will be offered on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will hike the trails around the Environmental Center while playing a game of trivia led by naturalist Vanessa Stager.
Thursday in the Park: Fall Leaves, for children ages 6 to 9, will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will join Schlegel in collecting and documenting the variety of leaves in local woodlands, and they should dress for the weather. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
