Manheim Tennis Team Posts Three Win Week

The Manheim Central girls' tennis team is on quite a roll. With a 5-1 record and its only loss coming against Lampeter-Strasburg, the Barons earned three wins last week in dominating fashion. They beat Solanco Monday, Sept. 21 and Cedar Crest Wednesday, Sept. 23 by 7-0 scores and Cocalico Friday, Sept. 25 by a 6-1 score.

Senior Eliana Shenk dominated in 6-2, 6-2 win against Cedar Crest and 6-1, 6-0 against the Eagles.

Senior Cassie Ginder posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 triumph against CC and 6-4, 6-2 against Cocalico. Sophomore Holly Miller won 6-0, 6-0 against the Falcons and 7-3, 7-6 (7-1) against the Eagles.

Shenk and sophomore Brianna Mylin have been unstoppable at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0 and 8-1, respectively against CC and Cocalico. Miller and Ginder have been outstanding at second doubles, winning 8-2 (CC) and 9-7 (Cocalico).

"The team is doing very well in doubles," head coach Kurtis Funk said. "We often start 3-0 in doubles before we start singles action."

GOLF

The golf team wrapped up its season at the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament at Media Heights Golf Course. MC did not win a match, but it improved by 110 strokes from the beginning of the season to the final match, head coach Connor Sheehan pointed out. "Overall nerves and a lack of experience was a factor in our scoring," Sheehan added.

Senior Wyatt Becker shot a 107 at the league tourney. Emma Kensey, in her first year, posted a 127. Freshman Cayden Schwebel shot a 128.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lady Baron harrier took four of the top five spots in a 19-44 win over Northern Lebanon and 15-50 triumph over Lancaster Mennonite last Thursday. Freshman Julie Lindberg (21:34) earned her first win in a varsity meet, and freshman Savannah Semple (22:32) finished third overall. Jenna Moffett (23:15) was fourth and Alaina Bruckhart (23:46) placed fifth. Coach Ryan Kennedy said the team exceeded his expectations.

For the boys, Brady Knier (18:08) earned his first varsity meet first place finish. The Barons beat Lancaster Mennonite 15-50, but lost to Northern Lebanon, 24-34. Kennedy said NL was just better than his squad, but overall, it was a solid start.

Ezekiel Ruffner (18:44) placed fifth overall, Bailey Garman (18:56) was sixth.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The Lady Barons beat Ephrata, 3-2, Thursday, Sept. 24. MC was up 2-0 at halftime on goals by Summer Bates and Emma Myers. Ephrata got one back to make it 2-1 and the Baron's Hannah Adair made it 3-1 shortly after that. The Mountaineers got a second goal with about four minutes left to make it a tight ending.

"I was really happy with the way we played," head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. "Their (Ephrata) two goals came on long through balls, but we controlled a lot of the play and created some really good scoring opportunities."

Stoltzfus said a lot of players got their first meaningful varsity minutes and looked comfortable at this level and he's excited to see how his young team continues to come together this season.

The Barons (1-1) lost a heart-breaker against Hempfield, 1-0, on Saturday giving up a goal with 6.6 left in regulation.

BOYS' SOCCER

The Barons dropped two close games last week, losing to Ephrata and Oley Valley, two of the tougher teams Manheim (0-2) will play all season. OV won the Berks County title last year.

Playing in a steady mist Saturday, Nathan Reed cashed in on a penalty kick, after a foul in the box late in the game by the OV goalie.

Against the Mountaineers on Thursday, freshman Gabe Redcay took a beautiful feed from Reed inside the 18-yard line and trickled his shot past the Mounts' goalie to tie the game at 1-1. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime. Ephrata scored the go-ahead goal with about nine minutes remaining.

"The score is not a good indicator of how strong we are," head coach Rod Brenize said. "The record does show how good we are. ...The kids are resilient."

VOLLEYBALL

Garden Spot beat Manheim 25-11, 25-18 and 25-16 Thursday. The Spartans served well and defensively didn't allow the Barons to get in a rhythm, head coach Jason Moyer said.

"When we did pass well we did compete with them," Moyer said. "We just didn't do it enough to be competitive."

Madison Knier had six kills, two blocks and two aces and Emma Moyer had four digs and two kills. Grace Stoltzfus added two blocks and Mackenzie Ginder collected a serving ace.

FIELD HOCKEY

Manheim lost 3-2 to Ephrata on Saturday. Jenna Lutz and Kylie Kroesen found the back of the cage for the Baron (0-2). "We have a very young team that is still working out the kinks and understanding what their roles are," said head coach Morgan Briggs, whose team lost 5-0 to Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday. "The more experience this team gets will pay off in the long run."

FOOTBALL

Dave Hahn said his team's senses were heightened after the Barons suffered a 35-19 loss to Cocalico last Friday.

Logan Shull hit two field goals of 37 and 27 yards to cut into Cocalico's 14-0 lead. MC fought back in the third quarter, cutting the Eagles' lead to 21-13, after defensive back Mason Weaver recovered a fumble and dashed 18 yards for the score. Quarterback Judd Novak threw a 34-yard TD pass to Owen Sensenig, but that was the end of the Barons' scoring.

The loss snapped a six-game win streak against Cocalico and a 23-game win streak in Section Two.

"We've had bumps in the road before. You have to learn from them," Hahn said. "Losses stink, but they are opportunities to learn much more than you probably do from a win. You win a game and tend to take that and enjoy the victory and look at the positives all the time. When you lose, you really point out those bad plays, those negatives and you really focus on attention to detail and getting those things better."
