The Susquehanna Folk Music Society has planned a workshop and a concert.
Folk and traditional artists interested in teaching or developing their artistic skills or repertoire are invited to attend a free virtual workshop on Wednesday, March 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop will walk attendees through the process of writing an apprenticeship grant to the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA).
Apprenticeships in folk and traditional arts are grants that support the learning of traditional arts within cultural communities across the state. Each grant award provides funding up to $4,000 to a partnership between a master traditional artist and a qualified apprentice, enabling them to work together over the course of a year to share and develop advanced techniques or repertoire.
In the upcoming workshop, viewers will learn who is eligible, how to write a compelling application narrative, how to develop a budget and what criteria are used to evaluate the applications.
Register for the free workshop at http://www.sfmsfolk.org. Grant guidelines and a copy of the grant can also be found on the aforementioned site or by emailing folkarts@sfmsfolk.org.
The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will also offer a virtual concert with Tom Paxton and the DonJuans on Saturday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.
There is a fee for general admission, and admission is free to Susquehanna Folk Music Society members. To register or to learn about membership, visit the aforementioned website.
Paxton has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 1960s Greenwich Village scene. He has received multiple Grammy nominations, a Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC in London. Over his more than 50-year career, he has penned hundreds of songs, many of which have been recorded by renowned artists from Paul Simon to Tiny Tim.
The DonJuans are Don Henry and Jon Vezner, both Grammy Award-winning songwriters whose songs have been covered by a multitude of artists, including Janis Ian, Ray Charles, John Mellencamp and Miranda Lambert.
The Susquehanna Folk Music Society is supported by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered locally by the Cultural Alliance of York County. To learn more, visit the aforementioned website or call 717-745-6577.
