Many events have been canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Solanco High School's traditional prom was one of them. As opposed to calling off the festivities completely, parents of Solanco High School students decided to plan a prom and post prom for the seniors.
Although parents have been in charge of organizing post prom for several years, this will only be the second year they have planned both prom and post prom.
"This year has been very difficult because of the pandemic," explained Gretchen Pletchner. "There have been so many roadblocks and limitations on what we could do to fundraise."
The parents have been raising money for the event since last summer. So far, they have sold mums from Esbenshade's Garden Centers & Greenhouse, subs from R&K Subs, homemade pork barbecue, Emma's Popcorn, and more. Their most recent event was a dinner with a 50/50 giveaway drawing and silent auction at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard.
"The dinner at Britain Hill was a huge success," noted Connie Boyd. "We had amazing support from the community. It really boosted everyone's positivity to keep going."
Prom will take place on Saturday, June 26, in the Jim & Eleanor Kreider & Family Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds. There will be a dinner and dancing, followed by a pool party for post prom.
"Our group is still meeting to brainstorm ideas of how to raise more money," added Pletchner. "Everyone is struggling in some way with the pandemic. We need donations, but we understand that we're all in a difficult situation."
"We're doing all of this for the kids," said Boyd. "They deserve to have something normal because their entire senior year hasn't been normal."
