If you live in the Solanco area, you are probably familiar with the Southern End Community Association (SECA), 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. SECA's mission is to create recreational opportunities for local residents of southern Lancaster County by providing high-value programs for children and adults. The organization was founded by residents of southern Lancaster County in 1993 after they purchased SECA's current property from the American Legion in 1992.
On Saturday, April 24, from 8 to 11 a.m., SECA will host its annual Youth Fishing Derby for children age 13 and under. Children will fish in the pond on SECA's property and compete for cash prizes provided by Southern End Outdoors. Registration is limited, and preregistration is required. Registration will not be available the day of the event. Fishing gear will not be provided.
SECA will host its annual plant sale in its parking lot on Saturday, May 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in making plant donations may drop off plants on Friday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to noon and from 5 to 7 p.m. Plants will be organized according to their need for sun or shade and color coded for pricing.
On Saturday, May 29, SECA will host its first Dash and Splash 5K and Kids' Fun Run. Registration will open at 8 a.m., the Kids' Fun Run will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K will start at 10 a.m. All runners will be given free pool entry on the day of the event. An award ceremony will take place immediately following the 5K race, and awards will be given to the overall male and female champions and to the top three male and female finishers in the following age groups: 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over.
For the past two years, Rick Kerns has served as director of SECA. He said he believes people should attend these upcoming events because he wants to provide as many recreational opportunities as possible to southern Lancaster County. "Not every event is for everyone, but we try to get as many events out there as possible," he said. "If there's something a resident is interested in that we don't offer, I hope they let me know and maybe we can work something out."
