As part of its Summer Series, Part 1, the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County will present a Third Saturday program, "Gunbuilding in the 18th Century," on July 17 at its headquarters, the White Horse Tavern, 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville.
The program will begin at 11 a.m. Trust volunteer Barrie Miller will present a demonstration and program on Colonial America gun making, including Berks, Lancaster, and York counties and Shenandoah Valley style rifles. The program will include sample guns and accoutrements and address the progression of the rifle in America. Miller's presentation will also include Pennsylvania militia activities, musters, marching to drums and Revolutionary War highlights presented with period flags. Miller is a Colonial America living historian, re-enactor and gun builder.
There will be a nominal suggested donation per person. All proceeds will benefit the Trust. The program will take place outdoors, and there will be no restrooms available on-site. Visitors should wear a mask and maintain proper social distancing. The event is weather-pending; check the Trust Facebook page for updates if needed.
