Park Programs Announced

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Fire-Starting, for people age 5 and up, will take place on Saturday, June 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants will safely practice starting a fire with a variety of methods. Attendees may bring their own marshmallows and fixings for s'mores; roasting sticks will be provided.

What's the Buzz About Bees? will be offered on Sunday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants will hear a story, make a craft, and learn about bees. This program is geared for children age 8 and under.

Magnify the Natural World, for people of all ages, will be held on June 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. As they walk through the meadows and woods, participants will look closely at small things. Attendees should meet at the Muhlenberg Wildflower Meadow parking lot, located at 548 Golf Road, Lancaster.

GPS Tic-Tac-Toe, for people of all ages, will be offered on Wednesday, June 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Speedwell Forge County Park. Participants should meet at the trailhead at 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz. After a brief introduction to the use of provided handheld GPS units, participants will take to the trails. They should dress for the weather and for trails that may be muddy. When registering, people must specify the number of GPS units they wish to borrow; at the event, their driver's license or keys will be held until units are returned.

Why Add Hiking to Your Fitness Program? will be offered for people over 50 on Tuesday, July 6, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. During a hike on the Lancaster Central Park's Scout Trail, a naturalist will explain the benefits of hiking and will give tips on safety, equipment, and ways to get the most out of a hike. Registration and payment are due by noon on Friday, July 2.
