Beauty In The Backyard

The backyards of Marietta will take center stage during the Marietta Community House Garden Tour. The tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 11.

"There will be eight beautiful gardens to visit as you stroll or drive through historic Marietta," said Karen Sullivan, vice president of the Marietta Community House Board of Directors and chair of the garden tour committee. "Buying a ticket provides you with a map indicating parking areas and the locations of each garden along with a brief garden description."

In addition to the tour, the event will feature two sessions of a seminar on herbs and their uses. Pulled pork barbecue dinners will also be for sale. Dinners will include a pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, brown sugar baked beans, potato chips, a dessert and a beverage.

The tour will also feature a painting exhibit including 20 local artists and garden-themed artwork. Organized by Marietta Art Alive, the exhibit will be held in one of the gardens featured on the tour.

"The Marietta Community House has sponsored the tour for 10 years and appreciates the support of members of the community volunteering to show their private gardens," Sullivan stated. All proceeds will support the care of the Community House's two buildings. The buildings, located at 264 W. Market St., Marietta, are used to host community events or may be rented for special occasions.

Tickets for the garden tour and barbecue dinner may be reserved by calling 717-994-6661. Tickets may also be purchased at Floral Designs of Mount Joy, 1599 W. Main St.; Murphy's Mercantile & Co. or Hinkle's Restaurant, 261 Locust St., Columbia; Bron's Deli, 34 W. Market St., Marietta; or River Road Produce, 1835 River Road, Marietta.
