GEARS Plans Activities

GEARS will offer several activities. Unless otherwise noted, separate fees have been set for GEARS members and for nonmembers. Registration and details are available at http://www.getintogears.org or by calling 717-367-0355.

GEARS will hold tryouts and skill evaluations for the 2021-22 travel basketball leagues for girls and boys in fifth and sixth grades. All tryouts will take place in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road. Girls' tryouts will be held on Monday, Oct. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 16, from 8 to 9 a.m. Boys' tryouts are set for Oct. 11 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. and Oct. 16 from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. The season, including practices, will begin in early November and run through the end of January. There is no cost to try out, but preregistration is required. All players selected for the travel team must pay a fee.

Wills, Trusts, and Estates will be offered on Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Thomas S. Beckley, a lawyer, will explain what a will is, what happens if someone does not have a will, how to make a will, what a trust is, how to decide if one needs or wants a trust, and what is involved in administering an estate. Questions about particular circumstances will be welcomed.

Medicare Madness will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the senior center. The basics of Medicare will be explained, including how and when to sign up for Medicare, what is covered by the different parts of Medicare (A, B, C and D), the difference between a Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) and a Medicare Advantage plan, and how to find a plan that best fits one's needs. Medicare bingo will be played.

What's in the Sky Tonight? will be held on Friday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Chickies Creek Day Use Area, located on Long Lane. The program will be a discussion of different ways to get to space, followed by observing the skies if weather and sky conditions permit. People age 6 and up are welcome to participate, and a parent or guardian must be present for children under 16. There is a fee.
