Underground Railroad Learning Tour Planned

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society is partnering with the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania to offer an Underground Railroad learning tour on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia.

Participants will visit nine locations and learn about the everyday people who took exceptional risks to support formerly enslaved newcomers, some of whom traveled through and some of whom settled in Columbia. All storytelling will be conducted outdoors, with one option to enter the mansion adjacent to the Bank and Bridge Company building, see a short slide presentation, and hear from a local historian about how the 1812 and 1832 bridges across the Susquehanna facilitated Underground Railroad travel.

Each guest will receive a keepsake "passport" showing the route and featured sites. The passport also provides a complimentary driving tour route.

A face covering is required. Advance registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 20, at http://bit.ly/URTour21. The learning tour will be held rain or shine.
