British Pilot To Speak At Roundtable

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its next monthly meeting online via Zoom on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Royal Air Force (RAF) veteran Richard E. Boyd.

Boyd, who turned 100 on Nov. 17, was born in London and served in the RAF from 1941 to 1947. Assigned to the United States, he received his U.S. Army Air Forces wings in 1942 and became an instructor for the USAAC the next year. From 1944 to 1945, he was stationed in England with No. 195 Squadron, No. 3 Group Bomber Command. As RAF flight lieutenant in charge of a seven-man crew, Boyd flew 33 missions in an Avro Lancaster between 1944 and 1945 over France and Germany. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for courage and devotion to duty in operations against the enemy.

In 1945, Boyd was transferred to Transport Command taking troops and supplies to and from India. He retired from the RAF in 1947, following a six-month recovery from injuries sustained as a passenger in the crash of a York transport plane. Boyd spent the next 39 years in commercial aviation, retiring in 1986. He lives in Lancaster.

The Zoom meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. To attend, visit http://www.centralpaww2roundtable.org.
