New Year's Fun For Everyone

Make plans to attend the annual First Night Hallam/Hellam New Year's Eve Celebration, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31. The activities will take place at the Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St.

"Though we are downsizing a bit ... we do hope to at least provide a bit of fun and laughter in these continuing times of uncertainty," said event organizer Joyce Dusman. "As in the past, the festivities will include entertainment for the young and old throughout the evening."

Kids and families can enjoy a variety of crafts and an opportunity to interact with critters from a local animal organization.

A giant shoe, to honor Hallam's famous Haines Shoe House, will be part of the countdown festivities as well. "How we are going to display our shoe, either up or down, is yet to be decided," Dusman said, adding that whatever is planned promises to be fun and memorable.

The event is free to the community, but organizers are asking for donations to Bell Socialization Services, a nonprofit organization based in York that offers mental health services, intellectual disability services and shelter services. "We will be filling buckets with cleaning supplies such as sponges, cleaning cloths, Lysol, bleach, mops, Windex, just to name a few things," Dusman said, encouraging people to bring an item of their choice. "Think if you were to clean, what would you use? And bring that."

Everyone who brings at least one item will receive a ticket for giveaway drawings that will be held during the event. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.

"For the health of the community, we ask that you practice social distancing and wear a mask while inside the fire hall, when not eating and drinking," Dusman stated, adding, "Why not be creative? Who can come up with the craziest mask to celebrate?"

Dusman noted that there will be a donation box for people to contribute to support next year's event.

She said organizers are especially excited for this year's activities since last year's festivities were canceled due to the pandemic. "Our committee has been deciding how to pull things together to provide a fun-filled evening the community can safely enjoy to ring in the new year," she remarked.
