Marietta means everything to Rebecca Carroll Baltozer. "I am an eighth-generation Marietta resident," she said. "I grew up in Marietta." She's taking her knowledge and love of the town with her in her new role as mayor of Marietta. She was elected in November and began her term on Jan. 3.
Running for mayor was a natural choice, Baltozer stated, noting that her past involvement with community organizations includes serving as president and treasurer of Marietta Restoration Associates as well as serving on the board of Susquehanna Stage Company. Prior to assuming her role of mayor, she served on the Marietta Borough Council, and she just co-chaired the 55th Candlelight Tour in December, which drew more than 1,200 people to Marietta.
As mayor, Baltozer hopes to focus on diversity and inclusion in the town and inspire new residents to get involved. "I hope to get people ... to realize the decisions that affect our daily lives truly happen at the lowest level of government," she explained, noting that she's also excited to show off everything Marietta has to offer to newcomers in town and visitors.
Her role as mayor will include not only promoting Marietta and what it offers but also working collaboratively with other groups and individuals. "I will be a part of helping our police department and keeping our town safe," she stated.
When she's not wearing her mayor hat, Baltozer works at the Turkey Hill Experience in Columbia. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, which includes her husband, Justin, and their fur babies, Jude and Eleanor, and being outdoors. "A campfire is my true place of peace," she remarked. "We love spending time boating on the Chesapeake with our second family in Edgemere, Maryland."
As she gets into the rhythm of her new position, Baltozer said she hopes to continue to promote the town she loves. "I only want the best for Marietta today and for future generations," she commented. "Truly the mayor's role is to help to voice the needs of our town to the council. What the council works on today is for the future of Marietta."
And, she said, that future is a bright one. "I just hope to embrace the journey," she stated. "Let's make every day our best day and move forward in a positive manner."
