After seeing the Mountville tribute street banners titled "Honoring Our Veterans," which were installed on telephone poles last year, East Petersburg Borough manager Karen St. Clair was inspired to implement a similar project in the borough. After contacting the East Petersburg Lions Club, the borough and the Lions created the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, which will honor borough residents who have served or are currently serving in any branch of the U.S. military.
"I just want our vets to be recognized for their service," said St. Clair. "We're such a small community here, so I think it's a good way to honor them and say thank you. All the vets that I've talked to have been so thankful and so appreciative."
The banners, which will be installed on telephone poles within the borough, will measure 30 inches wide and 60 inches tall. Each banner will include a headshot of two honorees because the banners will be double-sided, and each side will feature the individual's branch of service and era of service. St. Clair noted that the banners will be installed by LH Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment on or before Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. There will be 30 banners honoring 60 veterans.
"I'm excited to see the banners in the air and for the whole project to come to fruition," commented East Petersburg assistant treasurer Jennifer Guzejko.
To fund the creation and distribution of the banners, members of the East Petersburg Lions Club have placed monetary donation baskets at S. Clyde Weaver Inc., 5253 Main St., East Petersburg; Wayne's Towing & Recovery, LLC., 5199 Main St., East Petersburg; Two Cousins Pizza, 5313 Main St., East Petersburg; State of the Art Custom Framing & Gallery, 1945 State St., East Petersburg; LANCO Dental Care, 1882 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster; Gochnauer's Home Appliance Center, 5939 Main St. No. 1519, East Petersburg; Family Fare Restaurant, 5921 Main St., East Petersburg; Glatfelter's Barber Shop, 2025 State St., East Petersburg; and Mad Chef Craft Brewing, 2023 Miller Road, East Petersburg.
From Monday, March 7, to Sunday, March 13, every time a pint of F-18 is sold, Mad Chef Craft Brewing will donate $1 to the East Petersburg Lions Club, which will benefit the Hometown Heroes Banner Program.
Applications for the banners are available at the borough office, 6040 Main St., East Petersburg, and online at https://bit.ly/EastPetersburgHometownHeroesApplication. Those who complete online applications can email them along with a photo of the honoree to jguzejko@eastpetersburgborough.org. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with a deadline of Thursday, March 31. If more than 60 applications are submitted, the remaining applications will be held for the next banner-hanging, which will take place in approximately three to four years. Honorees must currently live in or have lived in East Petersburg Borough.
