YCAS Plans Programs

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) now offers Saturday afternoon programs for young children and families and Saturday evening programs for older family members in the planetarium at the York Learning Center, 301 E. Sixth Ave., York.

On April 2, YCAS will present "A Part of the Sky Called Orion" at 7 p.m. and "Two Small Pieces of Glass" at 8:20 p.m. Through imagery, music, and words, "A Part of the Sky Called Orion" examines the different stories and images that the Greek, Egyptian, and Inupiaq cultures had for the same stars. This show is best for children in second grade and above, but younger children are welcome to attend. "Two Small Pieces of Glass" explores how the telescope has helped humans understand their place in space and how telescopes continue to expand their understanding of the universe.

On April 9, YCAS will offer "One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure" at 2 and 4 p.m. and "Defying Gravity: It Is Rocket Science" at 3:20 p.m. "One World, One Sky" features Elmo, Big Bird and their friend Hu Hu Zhu, who lives in China. The three friends learn about the stars, the moon, and more. In "Defying Gravity: It Is Rocket Science," Apollo Aurora, host of the Planetarium Channel's gravity news source, and her team, along with two robot correspondents, explore rocket power, gravity on other planets, black holes, and more.

StarWatches will be presented at 7:40 p.m. on April 2 and 2:40 p.m. on April 9. Attendees will explore the current night sky, locate visible planets and constellations, and enjoy sky lore.

Separate admission fees have been set for adults and for children and seniors. Admission to any second or third show is discounted. Cash and most credit and debit cards are accepted. Private show reservations are available.
