The Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA) will present its spring recital on Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m. at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster.
WYPA is a student group under the auspices of the Musical Art Society and consists of local young musicians, many of whom have received scholarships and awards for their achievements. Included in the April program will be works by Bach, Haydn, Bizet, Chopin, Copland, Khachaturian and Gershwin. Piano and harpsichord solos will be performed by local teenagers Matthew Yang, Peter Hasse, Kyle Bainhauer, Candace Mbugua, Sean Skinner and Kaleb Lambert, and solos will also be played on the flute, cello and violin. The conclusion of the program will feature Johnny Adkins as the piano soloist in George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," with the orchestra part being played by Margaret Marsch on a second piano.
The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be received to go toward scholarships and educational goals of the Musical Art Society.
WYPA meets for two hours in the afternoon one Sunday each month from September to March, with public recitals in December, April and June. Students learn performance skills by playing for each other and receiving constructive feedback from peers and counselors in preparation for the public presentations. After the April 10 event, the next recital will be held on Tuesday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. at The Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster.
