Support the Elizabethtown Fair and pick up dinner at the same time on Saturday, May 14. A chicken barbecue will be held on the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., with drive-through pickup from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"This is our only fundraiser for the fair," said Ann Salter, chair of the barbecue committee. She noted that the committee hopes to raise about $10,000, which will be used to cover operating expenses at the fair.
"We are also having a bake sale during the barbecue, with baked goods made or donated by fair personnel," said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. "The proceeds from that will go toward our fair queen scholarship competition."
Each barbecue meal will include a half-chicken, donated by Wenger Feeds and prepared by Harvey's Main Street BBQ; potato chips, contributed by Herr's; applesauce, provided by Charles & Alice; a roll, donated by Pepperidge Farm; a dessert, contributed by Mars Wrigley; and a beverage, provided by Swiss Premium Dairy Inc.
The Elizabethtown Fair will return for its 49th season on Monday, Aug. 22, through Saturday, Aug. 27. The fair offers animal, agricultural, competitive and commercial exhibits, as well as free nightly entertainment, rides and food.
"The fair is the biggest community event in the area, and there is no admission fee," Salter said, crediting barbecue proceeds with keeping the fair free.
