Food, fun and foliage will be in the spotlight at Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church during the annual Spring Fling. The event will take place at the church, 404 Hellam St., on Saturday, May 21, beginning at 8 a.m.
Food options will include coffee and doughnuts, hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, french fries and milkshakes. "We will have tables set up for people who want to eat here," said Donna Ream, who is co-chairing Spring Fling with Tim Lehman. "People can also take their food to go."
The event will also feature homemade baked goods and candy for sale, along with used books, games and puzzles. "We'll have a rummage sale, with clothing and accessories," Ream commented. "We'll also have a plant sale, featuring indoor and outdoor plants, birdfeeders and other lawn decorations." Everything for sale at Spring Fling is made or donated by congregation and community members.
Children's activities will be offered, and Studio12, a local dance studio, will present performances at 9 and 11:30 a.m.
"We'll also have an opportunity for people from the community who want to set up a yard sale table," Ream noted, adding that people can rent a space and also rent a table if necessary.
Proceeds from Spring Fling will be used for improvement projects and the church's general fund. Work needed in the future includes replacing two furnaces and rebuilding the church's bell tower.
Ream emphasized that Spring Fling is a tradition people look forward to every year. "We always say, 'Bring your family, bring your neighbors, bring your friends.' We have something for everybody," she said. "People like to come to meet up with old friends and to see people they don't see that often. It's a really fun day."
Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church is home to Phoebe's Closet, a community clothing bank, as well as a community food bank. The church holds services on Sundays at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday school. A children's service is held during the worship service.
