Vraj Parikh, a 15-year-old Boy Scout who attends Manheim Township High School, will offer a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) camp for children in grades three to five. The event will take place on Saturday, May 21, from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.
Holding the camp will help Vraj to meet some of the requirements for his Eagle Scout Award. Vraj has been a member of Troop 99 for five years and has served in various leadership positions, including senior patrol leader.
The STEM camp is nonprofit and fully volunteer-run, with proceeds benefiting Manheim Township Public Library. Children will be able to participate in science experiments using reactants such as hydrogen peroxide and dry ice, create simple circuits, learn programming with the help of Makey Makeys, build their understanding of the engineering design process and apply it to complete two design challenges, explore the basics of cryptography and number theory, and more. All activities are designed to be as hands-on and thought-provoking as possible to foster a lifelong interest in STEM.
There is a fee per child, and food will be available for purchase. The event is not a drop-off activity, and a parent must accompany their children.
