GEARS Plans Activities

GEARS will offer several programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for GEARS members. To register or for more information, visit http://www.getintogears.org or call GEARS at 717-367-0355.

Zumba, a dance fitness class that fuses musical rhythms and unique moves, will be offered for people age 14 and up on Wednesdays, June 8 to Aug. 17, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Fighting Dragons, 101 E. Cherry St., Elizabethtown. There will be no class on July 6. The routines feature interval training where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined.

Iddy Biddy Baseball/Softball, for children ages 4 to 6, will be held on Fridays, June 10 to July 15, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Field 2 at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Instruction will center on throwing, catching and batting skills. The fee includes a T-shirt.

POUND will be held on Fridays, June 10 to Aug. 19, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Fighting Dragons, 101 Cherry St., Elizabethtown, with no class on July 1. Participants will use Ripstix, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercise. Participants must be age 14 or older, and they should bring a yoga mat.

GEARS Recreation will host a Singles Tennis Tournament on June 10 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 11, at 8 a.m. at the EAHS tennis courts. Players will compete in a single-elimination tournament with divisional breakdowns by age and/or skill level. Prizes will be awarded for each division. There is a fee to participate.

A CSI E-town Camp will be offered for youths ages 9 to 14 from Monday to Thursday, June 13 to 16, from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 2605 at EAHS. Each day, campers will learn a real forensic technique and then use it to solve a crime. Chemistry teacher Scott Baylor will instruct.

Discover Dance will be offered on Mondays, June 20 to Aug. 1, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. for children ages 3 to 4 and from 7 to 7:45 p.m. for those ages 5 to 6. There will be no class on July 4. The class will be held in the lobby at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. This program is designed to encourage younger children in a fun way to express themselves through creative movement and ballet.

Girls entering grades three through eight are invited to participate in a Girls' Basketball Camp from June 13 to 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Daubert Gym at EAHS. Coaches will stress the basics of dribbling, shooting, passing, and other skills. A camp T-shirt is included in the fee.

A Track & Field Camp, for children in grades three through eight, will be offered on Monday to Friday, June 13 to 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the EAHS track. Campers will work on distance, jumping, throwing, hurdles, starts, sprints, and relays. A T-shirt is included in the fee.

Game Changer Canine Training will be held on Mondays, June 13 to Aug. 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Park in Maytown. There will be no class on July 4. Through games and exercises, handlers can learn and teach their dogs concepts and skills. Handlers must be age 16 or older.
