The Junior League of Lancaster, PA, Inc. (JLL) announced that Emma Moyer is this year's winner of the 2022 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award. Moyer is a graduating senior at Manheim Central High School. Moyer received a $1,800 prize, $300 of which will be donated to North Star Initiative, Moyer's chosen charity.
Moyer's commitment to volunteer service is evident in her many activities, including Spanish Honor Society, through which she teaches Spanish to middle school students and provides translation for local nonprofit organizations; National Honor Society, where she leads Junior Achievement Day; Interact Club, where she volunteers with local retirement communities and soup kitchens; and activities at her church, where she serves as a small group leader for the middle school youth group and a member of the worship team.
Moyer shared that one of her most meaningful volunteer experiences has been her small group leader role at her church. As part of this program, Moyer mentors eighth-grade girls through life's challenges, builds relationships and encourages them on their faith journeys. Through her volunteer role, Moyer said, she has learned new perspectives on life's hardships, learned to manage difficult situations, felt a new gratefulness for her many blessings and honed her skills in asking for other perspectives on how to best handle a situation.
The award is named for Deborah P. Altman, a past president of the JLL, whose life exemplified a commitment to volunteering, a love of children and service to the community. The purpose of the award is to recognize young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspire their peers to volunteer in their communities. Since the award was established in 1984, more than $47,000 has been awarded to youths in Lancaster County.
