Reading incentives, special programming and story times are just some of the activities being planned at the Village Library of Morgantown as part of this year's Summer Reading Program.
Themed "Oceans of Possibilities," the program began with a presentation by Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary on June 13. Rothacker's interactive animal show featured live snakes, as well as lizards and turtles.
The kickoff event also provided youths an opportunity to pick up their summer reading packet. Individuals who are not signed up can still register by picking up a reading log at the library's circulation desk. There is one for teenagers and one for children up to age 12.
As part of the program, participants are asked to fill in a space on their reading log for every 20 minutes they read. When they reach 300 minutes, they are asked to come into the library for a prize.
In addition, for every reading log that is turned in, participants will receive a ticket for end-of-summer prizes. "If they come to an event, they (also) get a ticket," explained children's library director Pam Mohl.
Those who complete their reading logs and read for 1,200 minutes will be placed into an additional drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card at the end of the Summer Reading Program on Wednesday, Aug. 3.
In addition, Mohl is asking those who travel this summer to send a postcard from their destination to the library at P.O. Box 797, Morgantown, PA 19543. "If they do a day trip or activity, they can send a postcard to the library and we will (display) them and see where everyone has been," she said.
Adults may also take part in the Summer Reading Book Bingo Challenge. Those who complete five bingo squares this summer will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card. Some of the challenges on the bingo card include reading a book in the backyard or by a window or reading a book by a local author. Bingo sheets may be picked up at the library.
The library will present special story time programs on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. "We will have a different theme and different activities each week," said Mohl.
A Teen Art Show for youths age 12 and up will be offered on Saturday, July 23, during which local young artists can display and sell their work. Registration is required by Saturday, July 16. For complete details, stop by the library or email smolibrary@gmail.com.
"Rock the Library" will be presented on Saturday, July 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will be asked to paint a rock to be placed in the library's rock garden. Also included will be story time, face painting, a sale of baked goods, games and a "touch-a-truck" activity. No registration is required.
A back-to-school bash will be held for students age 12 and over on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. Pizza will be served, and attendees will receive school supplies and help to create chalk paint "graffiti" in the parking lot. The registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 12.
