Ayana Williams-Smith, a student at Immaculata University, is the recipient of the Alice Lawson Scholarship for 2022, awarded by the West Chester-Chester County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Williams-Smith, 47, mother of a 19-year-old son, was awarded the scholarship, given annually to a nontraditional woman student whose education has been interrupted due to family, work or other issues.
Williams-Smith earned a Surgical Technician Diploma from Harrison Career Institute in 2002 and a Holmium Laser Certificate in 2010 and completed an Associate in Science in psychology at Delaware Community College in 2019. Now, with just six credits to go, she is enrolled in Immaculata University's College of Adult Professional Studies (CAPS) with the goal of earning a Bachelor of Science in health care management. Attaining dean's list status during 2020 and 2021, she has been inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national society for nontraditional students.
In addition to her schooling, Williams-Smith works full time as a surgical tech at Lankenau Hospital. At Main Line Health, she is a member of the DREI (Diversity, Respect, Engagement and Inclusion) Committee.
Williams-Smith was introduced by Jane Schultz, scholarship committee chair, at the recent AAUW annual meeting.
