The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center at GEARS will host two special events this month for seniors. A Senior Business Expo will be held at the GEARS Community Center gym, 70 S. Poplar St., from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12. Cruise Week will be held from Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22.
This is the first time the center has held a business expo, said Wayne Bream, senior center assistant. A senior himself, Bream came up with the idea after benefiting from community organizations such as Hospice & Community Care following the death of his wife. "We currently have 25 businesses lined up for the expo, and they all cater to the senior community," Bream said. "We want this to be a benefit to any senior. It's free and it's open to anyone age 60 or older. It's an opportunity to see what services and resources are available to them." Participants will include the Lancaster County Office of Aging, Red Rose Transit, State Farm Insurance and Blue Cross Blue Shield. A bingo card will also be available for people to fill out and enter to win a door prize, and games will be offered in the gym and senior center.
Cruise Week was the brainchild of senior center director Jess Raush, who wanted to invite seniors to enjoy "all of the fun, none of the packing." Each day will feature armchair travels at 9:30 a.m., followed by cruise ship activities at 10:30 a.m. On Monday, the cruise will travel to Mexico and then people will have the opportunity to taste test cruise food and mocktails. Tuesday, July 19, will spotlight a journey to Hawaii, followed by live entertainment from Jeff Krick as Elvis. A luau lunch will also be held on Tuesday, featuring Hawaiian barbecue chicken, Hawaiian coleslaw, potato salad, tropical cheesecake salad and a 6-foot banana split. The meal is free, but registration is requested by calling 717-367-7984. Finkenbinder Family Funeral Homes is sponsoring the Hawaiian day. On Wednesday, July 20, cruise participants will visit Canada and will enjoy water activities and sand art. Thursday, July 21, will include a trip to New Zealand, followed by "choose your own adventure" activities or napkin folding. Cruise Week will wrap up with a trip to Thailand, followed by cruise ship bingo. People are invited to participate in all Cruise Week activities or pick and choose which days to attend.
The Senior Business Expo and Cruise Week activities are part of the senior center's mission to reach out to the community, Bream said. "We've been trying to do interesting things to keep people connected to each other and to the community," he noted. "It's a chance to socialize and enjoy some camaraderie."
