2019 Fair Baking Contests Posted

The Elizabethtown Fair will hold several baking contests, including the Mars Wrigley Confectionery Baking Contest, Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest, Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest, PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest, Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest, and Best of Show Decorated Cake Contest. Entries will be received between 4 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

The Mars Wrigley Confectionery Baking Contest includes the following classes: Decorated Cake (sheet, layer, molded); Sheet, Layer, and Cupcakes (frosted, glazed - plate of six); and Cookies, Brownies, and Bars (plate of six). The contest is open to both adults and youths for decorated cakes and cupcakes and to youths only for cookies, brownies, and bars.

All entries shall be made from scratch, and Mars Wrigley confectionery products must be used in all batters. Entries that do not include Mars product in the batter will be eliminated from the contest. Mars Chocolate brands include M&M's Chocolate Candies, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, Dove Chocolate, Twix Cookie Bar, Snickers, Snickers Marathon, Skittles Bite Size Candies, Starburst Fruit Chews, and Combos Snacks. All decorated entries shall be decorated with Mars Chocolate products. Recipes must be included for all entries. Decorated entries will be judged on appearance, creativity, and use of product. All other entries will be judged on flavor, appearance, and use of product.

The Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest will be presented by the Elizabethtown Fair, the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers, and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). Entrants may not have won first place in the Angel Food Cake Contest at any other fair in 2019.

The cake must be made from scratch and use eggs produced in Pennsylvania. The entry must be accompanied by the recipe. Each cake will be judged on flavor (30% - smell, taste, and flavoring), inside characteristics (25% - texture and lightness), overall appearance (20% - surface, size, and color), creativity (15%), and topping, icing, or decoration (10%).

The winner will receive a monetary prize, a crock, and the opportunity to represent the Elizabethtown Fair with his or her cake at the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January. The award will be presented and the cake will auctioned at the annual baked goods auction on Tuesday, Aug. 20, beginning at 7:30 p.m. A crock will also be awarded to the buyer of the cake.

The 2019 Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest is sponsored by the PSACF. A contest participant must be an individual amateur baker and a resident of Pennsylvania. The individual may not have won first place in the same contest at any other fair in 2019.

The layered chocolate cake must be made from scratch and frosted from scratch. The cake recipe must feature chocolate or cocoa as a main ingredient. Cake entries must be submitted for judging on cardboard or a disposable plate. Recipes must be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of an 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper. The recipe must list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions. The entrant's name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back of all the pages.

Cake entries will be judged on flavor (30%), moistness and crumb texture (25%), inside characteristics (20%), outside characteristics (15%), and frosting (10 percent). The winner will receive a monetary prize and the opportunity to represent the Elizabethtown Fair with his or her cake at the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show. Second- and third-place winners will also receive monetary prizes.

The 2019 PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, Bars Contest is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's PA Preferred program and the PSACF. More than 100 fairs across Pennsylvania will offer cash prizes for the best PA Preferred cookies, brownies, or bars in the Junior Baking Contest.

The goal of this contest is to encourage young people across the commonwealth to participate in Pennsylvania's agricultural fairs by showcasing Pennsylvania-grown and Pennsylvania-produced products in their contest entries. A contest participant must be an individual amateur baker ages 8 through 18 and a resident of Pennsylvania. Entrants may not have won first place in the PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest at any other fair in 2019.

For this contest, six cookies, brownies, or bars must be made from scratch and displayed on a food-safe disposable setting. At least two ingredients must be PA Preferred products. The ingredients are to be identified as PA Preferred with their brand name in the cookie, brownie, or bar recipe. A comprehensive list of products is available at http://www.papreferred.com.

Judging will be based on flavor (30%), texture (25%), inside characteristics (20%), outside characteristics (15%), and creativity (10%). The 2019 Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest will be held at the Elizabethtown Fair. The winning pie will receive a cash prize, a crock, and the opportunity to represent the Elizabethtown Fair with their apple pie at the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January. The contest is open to any Pennsylvania resident. Entrants may not have won first place in the Apple Pie Contest at any other fair in 2019.

Pies must be submitted in a disposable pie pan. The recipes for the pie and pie crust must be submitted with the entry on an 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheet of paper and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions. The entrant's name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back side of all pages. Each pie will be judged on flavor (30%); filling - consistency, doneness, moistness, and flavor (25%); crust - color, flavor, texture, and doneness (20%); overall appearance (15%); and creativity (10%). A variety of fillings in the pies is encouraged, but the pie must include at least 60 percent apples in the filling.

The Best of Show apple pie will be selected from the four first-place apple pies. First place will be selected in one-crust and two-crust pie categories in both the youth and adult divisions. The awards will be presented and the pie will auctioned at the annual baked goods auction on Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m. A crock will also be awarded to the buyer of the pie.

A Best of Show Decorated Cake will be selected from all first-place decorated cakes in the youth and adult divisions entered in the Elizabethtown Fair. The winner will receive a monetary prize and a crock. The award will be presented and the cake will auctioned at the annual baked goods auction on Aug. 20 beginning at 7:30 p.m. A crock will also be awarded to the buyer of the cake.
