Auditions Set For "The Nutcracker"

Laurel Dance Company will hold auditions for its 2019 holiday season production of "The Nutcracker" at the Laurel Dance Company, 541 E. Main St., Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 24. The performance will be the weekend of Saturday, Dec. 14, at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

Performers of all ages and training levels are invited to audition for the classic holiday ballet, which includes selections for advanced, intermediate, and beginner dancers, with parts including angels; the Snowflakes, Dewdrop, and Sugar Plum Fairies and divertissements from the Kingdom of Sweets; and the Stahlbaum grandparents and guests. There is also a need for male actors who move well and for male performers capable of lifting for partner dances.

Male parts include Herr Drosselmeyer, Herr Stahlbaum, Grandfather Stahlbaum, the Butler, and Mother Ginger, as well as dancers in several other scenes. Boys are needed for the parts of Fritz, friends, rats/mice, and soldiers. Female dancers on pointe are needed throughout the show and should bring their pointe shoes to the audition. The audition will include a ballet warm-up, technique demonstrations, and short choreography/direction-following exercises.

Children and adults with beginning or no experience in dance or theater will audition from 1 to 1:45 p.m., and auditions for children ages 8 to 10 years old with at least one to three years of dance experience will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. Intermediate dancers with at least three to five years of dance experience will audition from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., and they are asked to bring pointe shoes if applicable, though they are not required to do so. Advanced dancers with five or more years of dance experience will audition from 5 to 7 p.m., and pointe shoes are required.

A resume/bio and photograph must be brought to the audition. A nominal fee will be charged for the audition. Financial hardship considerations brought to the Laurel Dance Company board of directors will be confidentially considered.
