A Chance To Monkey Around

Special Event To Feature Curious George

A bit of monkey business is to be expected on Saturday, April 27, when the Friends of Manheim Community Library present their Character Breakfast at Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Curious George will swing by this year's event, accompanied by the Man With the Yellow Hat.

"Our children's librarian bases the choice (of special guests) on characters that she feels will appeal to the children," said event chair Kathy Bower. Curious George is certainly such a character, known and loved for his humorous antics. Whether any of those antics will be on display during the breakfast, however, remains to be seen. "No one knows for sure, so we'll have to wait and see!" Bower commented.

What is for sure is that children and their caregivers will be able to enjoy all things related to the beloved monkey during the breakfast. The event will feature a rotation that includes a half-hour for crafts and games, a half-hour for story time, and a half-hour for breakfast. Breakfast seatings have been set for 8:45, 9:15, and 9:45 a.m.

"It's a delicious breakfast prepared by the cooks at Pleasant View," noted Bower, adding that the hot buffet meal will include scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, pastries, juice, and milk, as well as coffee for adults.

Of course, with both Curious George and the Man With the Yellow Hat present, photo opportunities will be available for people of all ages. Bower noted that at last year's breakfast, which featured the Berenstain Bears, children and adults alike were thrilled to pose with the special guests. "The photos with the characters were very popular," she recalled.

An assortment of craft and game stations are being planned, some of which will relate to the "Curious George" theme. Children will have the opportunity to make kites and decorate bags at the craft areas, and games will include Pin the Hat on the Man With the Yellow Hat; Fishing for Bananas, with candy also in the mix; and Catch a Balloon in a Funnel. STEM stations will offer an opportunity to do a rainbow experiment, free play with Legos, and work with "flying letters," or paper airplanes.

When it is time to enjoy a "Curious George" story, attendees will gather by the fireplace to hear a tale read by children's librarian Miss Colleen. The original "Curious George" stories were written by Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey and illustrated by Alan J. Shalleck, with the earliest one published in 1941. Since then, the curious little monkey has been getting into plenty of mischief, with his experiences chronicled in a wide variety of media.

A total of 50 tickets will be sold for each breakfast seating, with separate costs set for children and for adults. Each child must be accompanied by an adult, and one adult may bring several children. Tickets must be purchased in advance by stopping by the library at 15 E. High St., Manheim, or visiting http://www.manheimlibrary.org/character-breakfast. Tickets will be available until they are sold out.

Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the library. The event will also feature an opportunity to support the library through a fundraiser featuring gift cards donated by area businesses.

The breakfast is a revival of an event the Friends group had held in the past. "Last year the Friends of the Manheim Community Library decided to start up the event again," Bower recalled. "We sold out, and the breakfast was very successful."

Bower, who served as a volunteer last year, enjoyed watching everyone take part in the various components of the event and anticipates a similar experience this year. "I loved seeing the smiles on the faces of all the children," she said. "Everyone in attendance was having a good time celebrating reading and books."
