A Passion For Art

God has had a hand in Emma Musser's life and most recently in her artwork. The young woman from Mount Joy just completed a mural at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. The 7-foot-high, 12-foot-wide mural is displayed over the entrance of the church's Kids Connect ministry in the lobby and depicts Jesus surrounded by children.

Musser, a 2020 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School, is taking a gap year while working at Floral Designs of Mount Joy and serving as state chaplain for FFA.

One day, the children's ministry director of Florin Church came into the flower shop and she noticed some of the artwork Musser had created in the store. "She reached out to me and asked if the mural was something I was interested in doing," Musser recalled, noting that she said yes, but still had some trepidation. "This is my first mural, and I was very nervous. I wasn't sure how everything was going to work out. I was scared I was going to fall off the scaffolding."

But Musser said she prayed about it and decided to go for it. Her father came with her to set everything up and make sure the scaffolding was safe, and Musser went to work. It took her about a week to complete the mural.

Musser, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser, has been creating art most of her life. She started out making custom dog paintings and has expanded her business, Emma's Custom Art, to include custom signs, calligraphy and more.

"Art is something that has always been so natural for me," she stated. "Sometimes, I step back and look at what I've made, and I'm like, 'Whoa, I'm amazed my hands can do that.'"

In the fall, Musser will attend Penn State Harrisburg to major in agricultural science, but she plans to continue making art as well.

"I don't like to put limits on myself," she said. "I love ag and art both equally, so my goal is to start out in ag and then eventually pursue art as a career."

The mural project at Florin Church of the Brethren helped reinforce for Musser how much passion she has for art, and it also helped raise her confidence in what she can accomplish.

"I give all the glory to God for everything I can do with my art," she stated. "I think it's so cool that my first big project was a mural in a church, and everything worked out well. I really believe it was a God thing."
