Safe Communities in Lancaster and A Better Way of Ohio will present a Child Abuse Prevention seminar to Lancaster County on Friday, April 29, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The seminar will be held at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Both organizations share a mission to prevent child abuse and support survivors in seeking justice and healing, including in Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities.
Five keynote speakers and 16 workshop choices will be featured. Opportunities to network and safe spaces for survivors will be offered throughout the seminar.
Topics will include "When School Is Not a Safe Place," "Understanding Why Sexual Abusers Continue to Abuse Children," "Self-Care for Advocates," "How the Court System and Advocates Can Help Survivors Find Justice," "What the Legal Process of Investigating a Report Looks Like," "Understanding Trauma's Lifelong Effects in Adulthood," "Finding Pathways to Healing," and "What Does God Say About Abuse?"
The inaugural exhibit of the "What Were You Wearing?" project will be on display. The project collects clothing from survivors in Plain communities in response to the question "What were you wearing when you were first abused?"
The registration fee per person includes the full two-day seminar as well as dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday, catered by Shady Maple. In addition, breakfast items and snacks will be on hand. A Zoom option will be available as well.
