After-School Program Sets Open House

Although it might seem like summer just started, the season is moving along, and the 2019-20 school year will begin sooner than one might think. Sara Petersen, after-school programs director at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, is already planning for the second year of the congregation's Open Door After-School Program, which will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 21. Students in sixth and seventh grades in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District are welcome to enroll. An open house will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

"The goal of Open Door After-School Program is to provide a safe and comfortable environment in which middle school students from L-S thrive," Petersen said. "This includes opportunities to grow deeper friendships, receive assistance in homework and study skills, participate in hands-on learning experiences, and be active in sports and play." Petersen noted that the program will offer learning enhancements, which may include snacks, homework time, crafts, recreational games, sports, and opportunities to develop and learn specific skills. Guest presenters will share information about mechanical trades, construction, knitting, medical/emergency responding, and other trades.

Open Door will follow the district calendar and will be offered on Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. when school is in session. On early dismissal days, the program will run from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Transportation will be provided from Martin Meylin Middle School to Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. There is a per-hour cost to attend Open Door.

Registration forms, such as emergency contacts and authorization, are available online at http://www.lampcob.com and upon request from the church office at 717-464-2050. Forms must be completed and submitted upon entry into the program.

The Aug. 6 open house will introduce parents and students to Open Door After-School Program. Students may be dropped off at the church at 5 p.m. They will play games in the gym and have a pizza dinner with chips, cookies, and beverages. After dinner, students may choose from several options, such as watching a movie, playing board games, coloring, and making a craft. Parents should pick up their children at 8 p.m., at which time questions will be addressed and registration forms will be available.

There is no cost to attend the open house, but registration is requested by Thursday, Aug. 1. To register, folks may email Petersen at afterschooldirector@lampetercob.com with the following information: parent's name, number of children attending and their names, relevant medical information, and an emergency number or contact information.

For more information about Open Door After-School Program or the open house, readers may email Petersen or call the church office at the aforementioned number.
