The York County Area Agency on Aging has announced two programs to aid seniors.
Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight (PA MEDI), formerly APPRISE, through the York County Area Agency on Aging, is offering free, personalized counseling during Medicare's annual open enrollment period, which will end on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
During Medicare open enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries have the option to compare and switch their Medicare Advantage Plan or Part D Prescription Drug Plan with new plans for 2022. These plans can change yearly. Premiums, deductibles, cost sharing and drug formularies are among the things that can change with the plans.
Throughout the open enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries will be able to receive counseling assistance offered by trained PA MEDI counselors. In an effort to protect clients and counselors from the community spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, plan comparisons will be conducted remotely. In-person plan reviews may be available upon request. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the PA MEDI scheduling line at 717-771-9042 or 800-632-9073.
The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer Healthy Steps for Older Adults, an evidence-based program designed to reduce fall risks among adults age 60 and older by raising awareness about the causes of falls and how to prevent them. The free workshop, open to any adult age 60 or older, will be held online on Fridays, Dec. 3 and 10, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Participants will learn how to exercise safely at home and will receive information on ways to improve their health and well-being. Discussions will include home and medication safety, as well as appropriate foot care and footwear.
Participants will take a functional physical assessment to determine their fall risk score. They will be referred to appropriate health care professionals and community resources as deemed necessary to meet their needs related to preventing falls.
Participants will need an email address and a computer, laptop, or electronic tablet with a camera. Reliable internet access is necessary. Preregistration is required by calling Faye Kinard at 717-771-9610, ext. 1044.
