The Junior and Senior Company dancers at the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy (VYIBA) will present "Ocean and Pearls" on Saturday, May 21, at 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The students will dance to music by Cesare Pugni, and the company will open the show with a special tribute dance for Ukraine called "Carpati."
VYIBA owner and director Viktor Yeliohin, a former soloist with the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine, is a ballet master, professor of choreography and studio director with a career spanning more than 20 years. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Yeliohin began his ballet studies in 1967, graduating from the Tashkent State Higher School of National Dance and Choreography of Uzbekistan. He holds the degree of professor of choreography from the Ukrainian Academy of Dance in Kiev, Ukraine. Yeliohin began his professional career in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, continuing in 1976 in Donetsk, Ukraine, where he performed as a soloist with the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine.
In 1992, Yeliohin started teaching ballet, choreographing and staging dance in the United States, primarily in studios in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. He opened VYIBA in the fall of 2010. For the past 28 years, Yeliohin has directed "The Nutcracker Ballet" every December, and he also directs and choreographs spring and summer shows.
Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students and seniors. Yeliohin has many friends in Ukraine, and 50% of the ticket sales will be donated to the Ukrainian community, specifically Ukrainian dancers and their families and children.
