The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will present two series of 75-minute virtual classes on both clawhammer banjo and old-time fiddle. The classes will be held on Sundays, June 6 to 27, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. for banjo and 8 to 9:15 p.m. for fiddle. They will be taught by seasoned old-time musician and teacher Janie Rothfield. During the workshops, participants will learn some Appalachian-style old-time tunes and songs along with handy tricks.
The clawhammer banjo workshop series is geared for people who have a little or hardly any experience playing clawhammer banjo. Rothfield will teach the fundamental right-hand clawhammer techniques such as bum-ditty, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, drop thumb, and chords, along with a variety of tunes and songs from the old-time repertoire.
The fiddle workshop series is for people who can play simple melodies at a moderate speed. Rothfield will teach participants a variety of tunes from the old-time/Appalachian-style repertoire, focusing on different bowing rhythms and patterns, how to add speed to one's playing and play chords for a tune or song, and how to express oneself on the fiddle.
This series of workshops has been designed for the novice or low intermediate level players who have basic skills on their instrument and want to improve their skills. Skills such as adding rhythm to one's playing, learning how to play in a jam, and picking up a tune on the fly will be explored. No previous experience with old-time music is required. Those with questions may contact the instructor at info@janierothfield.com.
There is a suggested donation per session. It is preferred that participants attend all workshops in the series, if possible. To find out more or to register, visit http://www.sfmsfolk.org. Information is also available by calling 717-745-6577.
