To continue to support its mission and residents, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will hold a pulled pork barbecue fundraiser on Friday, July 22. The drive-through pickup meal will be held in the parking lot of LCBC - Manheim Campus at 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, from 4 to 6 p.m. Each meal will include fire-grilled pulled pork, barbecue sauce, a sandwich roll, gourmet cheesy potatoes, baked beans with bacon, a side, and a dessert.
Mt. Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center with a mission of caring for residents regardless of their ability to pay. "It all started when God gave us the mission 'to serve the least of these,'" recalled longtime board member and current Mt. Hope resident Bruce McMillin, who noted that the facility faced the challenge of operating successfully with 90% Medicaid state assistance when it became Mt. Hope in 2006. Together with B.W. Hambrick, lead pastor of Ephrata Grace Point Church, Bruce helped shape the dream that became Mt. Hope when the church purchased the 50-year-old Dunkard Brethren Church Home at 3026 Mt. Hope Road. Almost immediately, major repairs were needed, Bruce recalled. "But, as God promised, He kept us on a straight path, finances were provided, and again, year after year, the Lord supplied enough money to do it, one way or another," Bruce stated. "God is so faithful to Mt. Hope."
Today, Bruce and his wife, Ginny, reside in an independent living cottage at Mt. Hope. Now in his early 90s, Bruce is proud of the success of Mt. Hope. He continues to spread the word about the facility's mission and housing opportunities. "Many people think Mt. Hope is only nursing care and aren't aware Mt. Hope has three duplexes for a total of six independent living cottages on these beautiful grounds," he said. "This community and the nursing care side is a wonderful, loving Christian environment where it's personal here. Everyone knows everyone, enjoys one another, and looks out for each other. It's such a small, home-like, friendly feel to it."
The community can help support the mission of Mt. Hope through participating in events including the pork barbecue. "We're grateful for the blessing of this community," said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org by Saturday, July 16. Extra meals will be available on-site while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may leave payment in a drop-box in the form of exact change or checks made payable to "Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community." The cost of the meal is $17.
