Barrens Chapter Members Attend State Assembly

The Pennsylvania State Society, Daughters of the American Colonists held its 97th State Assembly at the Holiday Inn Downtown Johnstown from Sept. 19 to 21. Six members of the Barrens Chapter were in attendance to help welcome the national president, Mary C. Armstrong.

Armstrong's project is to raise money to provide funding for signage in three areas along the Poplar Forest Parkway in Lynchburg, Va., at the entrance to Poplar Forest. The site was Thomas Jefferson's retreat near Lynchburg. A children's book, "Colonial Klaus in Thomas Jefferson's House," was purchased and placed in the Mason-Dixon Public Library in Armstrong's honor.

The state regent's project is Pets for Vets, which trains emotional support dogs that are matched with veterans for adoption. Eleven chapters raise money for that cause.

In addition to supporting the state society's activities, the Barrens Chapter supports the national president's project and helps with the maintenance of the national headquarters. The chapter attends three naturalizations courts in York. Monies are given to the York County Veterans Mentoring Program, and the chapter also supports the Dallastown Area High School JROTC with a scholarship each year. The chapter also supports location libraries and donates to the American Indian Scholarship and the College of the Ozarks.

The Barrens Chapter holds four meetings a year and a picnic in the summer. There are national defense, veterans, and flag reports at each meeting. The chapter currently has 25 members. For more information about the organization, readers may visit http://www.nsdac.org.
