CVCCS Program Keeps It Personal
Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) director Jonathan Barrett likes that the organization includes a personal touch aspect in all they do. "Our clients meet with us one-on-one in all our programs," said Barrett, who pointed out that the after-school mentorship program, food pantry, clothing bank, and Back-on-Track counseling program all use that format. "That fits who we are," he said, adding that the goal is to establish dignity for clients. "They are loved and that's a small way we can (show) that," he said.
Another example of that personal touch is the distribution of birthday bags. Birthday bags include a box of cake mix; a container of icing; candles; party decorations such as balloons and streamers; favors such as noise makers; a disposable aluminum cake pan; and decorative paper plates and napkins, all in a brightly colored gift bag. Bags may be created for children or adults.
"Ultimately, these are given out to those who use the food and clothing pantries," said Barrett, who said that birthdays are recorded and then checked when clients sign in. "When we verify their (identity) with their birthday, we note that if it is coming up," said Barrett, who added that volunteers generally anticipate the visit and have the bag ready. He estimates that CVCCS gives out about 150 birthday bags yearly.
Because there is always a need for the filled bags, Barrett has set the organization's social media to ask for donations once a month. He added that in the summer the stock of birthday bags tends to run low when donors are busy or away. "We ask volunteers and the public (to make up bags)," he stated, pointing out that many parents find this is a good project to do with their children. "They take their kids to the store (to purchase the items), and they say, 'This is for someone (in need). You can help make their birthday (special).'"
