Booters Show Competitive Edge Despite Losses

Last week's busy schedule brought the Lady Bucks a loss and a draw, giving them an overall record of 1-4-3 that hardly depicts just how hard the team has worked.

Five of the squad's first eight games have extended into overtime, with three of those contests still ending in a stalemate after double overtime.

On Wednesday, the team hosted Cedar Crest and reached their third impasse of the season, a 1-1 draw. The two teams have already met this season, just two weeks prior they were unable to determine a victor in a double OT game that ended 0-0 on September 8th.

This time, CV netted a first half goal from Delainey Varela-Keen, assisted by Leah Buch, but their lead was short lived as the Falcons scored the equalizer 14 minutes into the second half.

"Our team is a stout defensive team with strong goalkeeping and tough, skillful defenders," credited head coach Steve Baumann. "We are a possession-oriented team and our passing throughout the team has been excellent."

Monday's hosting of Manheim Township also went into OT during which Township got the upper hand and dealt the Bucks a 2-1 loss.

CV sophomore Aubree Boyd notched the first goal of the contest 35 minutes into the game, and Halie Rich provided the assist.

"Our attacking players are young and every game we see improvement in their movement and their ability to keep possession in attack."

On the 16th, the club slipped behind Penn Manor 1-0 in another tightly contested league match.

"With more experience, we expect our goal output will improve in the second half of the season," encouraged Baumann.

TENNIS

On Monday, the 20th the girls were dealt a 6-1 loss by Manheim Township. CV's lone point came in a hard-fought victory at No. 2 doubles where Savanna Burkholder and Nicole Fidler edged ahead 9-8 (5).

The previous Saturday, CV hosted the annual Buckskin Invitational and finished in 3rd place ahead of Wilson and behind Central York and Lower Dauphin.

In doubles play CV celebrated a No. 2 finals victory by Paige Harris and Sydney Harris who dug deep for a comeback win over their Central York opponents (2-6, 6-2, 10-7).

In the singles matchups, CV's Keyshla Baez (No. 2) and Megan Rychener (No. 3) made it to the final rounds of their respective brackets where Baez slipped to a Central York challenger in straight sets and Rychener was runner-up to her Wilson competitor 6-4.

Rychener was one of five athletes named to the All-Tournament team.

VOLLEYBALL

CV volleyball continues to pick up momentum, sweeping past Lancaster Catholic and McCaskey as they head into the mid-season.

Last Monday, the team made quick work of the Crusaders (25-14, 25-12, 25-18), featuring strong service from Emily Kornacki and Rhiannon Henry who each dished out four aces.

Becca Hartranft (nine kills) and Morgan Martin (eight kills) paced the offense, while Summer Getz was all over the court pairing 23 assists with 13 digs.

The previous weekend, the squad hosted JP McCaskey and handed out a similar outcome to clinch the 3-0 triumph (25-11, 25-13, 25-10).

Keana Frankford supplied eight digs and six kills, while Kassie Horning delivered three aces and three blocks, and Getz provided 14 assists.

BOYS' SOCCER

One hundred minutes on the field still wasn't enough time to settle the defensive dual between CV and Manheim Township on Monday the 20th, and the contest ended in a 0-0 draw after double overtime.

Township managed to fire off 11 shots on goal, but CV keeper Luke Snader handled them all to fend off the Blue Streak attack.

FOOTBALL

On the 17th, CV football suffered a 27-12 setback during a trip to Daniel Boone.

After falling behind 12-0 during the second quarter, CV fought back with a trip to the end zone when Buckskin quarterback Macoy Kneisley found Aidan Johnson for a 15-yard pass.

The Bucks added a third quarter safety and a fourth quarter 24-yard field goal from Jaden Walker to their tally but came up short.

Kneisley ended the evening with 165 passing yards on 12 completions.

GOLF

The Bucks finished in fourth place on Tuesday the 21st in a six-team matchup, their last of the regular season, at Tanglewood Golf Course, just four strokes behind third place finishers Garden Spot. The performance boosts their overall record to 13-12.

Solanco won the match boasting a 345 collective performance, followed by Elizabethtown (366), Garden Spot (374), CV (378), Manheim Central (393) and Ephrata (415).

CV's best individual score of the day was turned in by Carson Hoover who carded an 84 to take fourth place. Myles Jackson's 95 was the Bucks next best showing followed by a 99 from senior Nate Kirchner.

"Nate was a great teammate and leader all season," head coach Doug Helsel noted of the senior athlete, recalling Kirchner's first career eagle earlier in the season. Kirchner's performance in that match helped CV pulled ahead of Elizabethtown by a single stroke. "He played well for us this year," credited Helsel.

FIELD HOCKEY

CV field hockey came up just short of a comeback and experienced a 2-1 loss at Warwick last Tuesday.

Trailing the Warriors 2-0 after three quarters, the Lady Bucks continued to apply pressure and outshot Warwick 10-6. Their persistence earned them a late game goal from Lillian Buckwalter, but time expired before they were able to net an equalizer.

CV keeper Allyson Stauffer registered four saves in the loss.

CROSS COUNTRY

The tri-meet hosted by Warwick last Tuesday got away from both the boys' and girls' cross country teams, falling behind both Warwick and McCaskey in the collective finishes, but individual highlights were celebrated in both races.

Emmanuel Gitonga continues to be CV's frontrunner, clocking a 17:22.5 for second place overall. Tyler Slingluff (18:23) and Timothy Gitonga (18:35) came in under the 19-minute mark to rank 10th and 12th respectively.

Setting the pace for the Lady Bucks was Kylynn Frankford who placed seventh with a time of 22:26. Representing up-and-coming talent from the underclassman, sophomore Seana Dougherty (22:50) earned an 11th place finish and freshman Abigail Zook (23:05) was 13th.
