Boulder Bash Winners Crest Waves

After the fourth annual Boulder Bash at the Lititz recROC was postponed due to COVID-19 precautions, organizers decided to make sure the event, which was held on Sept. 12, was done in a manner that was safe for 70 climbers. The answer was to transform the competition into a series of competitor waves, with participants who ranged in experience from novice to advanced.

The Boulder Bash, which attracted climbers from southcentral Pennsylvania and Maryland, included three competitions for both youths and adults, which divided participants by gender. Members of recROC and local climbers placed in the top three in each division.

Placing in the women's novice division were, in first place, Liz Borders of Mount Joy; second place, Kiki Davis of Lancaster; and third place, River Smoker, a youth competitor from Lititz.

In the men's novice division, youth Christian Adams, of Manheim, took first; Noah Shettel, of Lititz, took second; and Shane Ober, of Lititz, took third.

The women's intermediate division was won by Leah Brown of Harrisburg, followed by Kathryn Greene of Newville and Megan Curry of York.

The men's intermediate division was won by Max Fioriti of Philadelphia, followed by Eric Resch of Lititz and Bryan Heckman, also of Lititz.

Among the women's advanced participants, Piper Brugmann, a youth from Lancaster, took first place; Jolie Abadir, also a youth from Lancaster took second and Meghan Anten of York came in third.

The men's advanced winner was Paul Lim of Towson, Md. Alex Barros of Harrisburg took second, followed by Mateo Chacon of Lititz.

Corey Pickel, coordinator at the Lititz recCenter's recROC facility, which opened in early 2017, said the event went off without a hitch. "With so few opportunities for competing this summer, the participants were more than ready and excited for the challenge," he reported. "It wasn't the full-scale event we would normally offer, but it was great to host a modified program." The recROC is a 10,000-square-foot world-class climbing and bouldering facility, offering opportunities for bouldering and a number of other workouts on a variety of equipment. Bouldering training for all levels of competitors and enthusiasts is available year-round at the recROC.
