Every summer, the Southern Branch YMCA of York and York County provides activities and programs that allow Camp Discovery campers the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. This year, 113 campers and 11 chaperones took a special Northern Central Railway - Steam Into History excursion through the countryside on the Glen Rock Express on July 11 to learn more about the historic railway that dates back to the late 1820s.
Campers rode along with a 1957 Pennsylvania GP 9 at what is known as the only place where an original Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive runs on a genuine Pennsylvania rail line. In addition, the campers were treated to a magical performance by Dr. Marc Charisse, the Professor of Prestidigitation, during their excursion.
Camp Discovery provides a camp experience for children of all ages. Staff provide a safe environment to enhance the core values of the YMCA: faith, hope, love, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Camp Discovery activities include field trips, science lessons, swimming, sports, arts and humanities, and activities that help campers learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Camp Discovery and the Northern Central Railway - Steam Into History plan to partner together to provide area youths with educational and entertaining experiences in the future.
