Celebrating The Community

Last year, Rheems Fire Department marked its 100th anniversary. A celebration was planned, but the pandemic put that on hold. Now it's happening as the department turns 101. Rheems Community Day and 9/11 Memorial will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the fire department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown.

"We wanted to have a great big to-do for our centennial last year," said Lesa Stanford, event coordinator. "When we started planning this event, we decided to make it a community day so we could invite the whole community out."

Admission to the event is free. The festivities will include games and activities provided by local businesses and nonprofit groups as well as food trucks including Piper Belle's BBQ, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Fuego Latino and Auntie Anne's. Live music will be performed by RICK K. Road Trip from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will conclude with fireworks beginning at approximately 9:15 p.m.

The celebration will also include a memorial service marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. "We'll be doing a short, 15-minute candlelight service," Stanford stated. "It's a way to remember all those who lost their lives that day." The service is set to happen after the band's performance and before the fireworks.

Stanford noted that the event offers a way for people to socialize with friends while also supporting local businesses and enjoying time together as a community.

"This past year, with everybody being homebound, we're excited to offer an opportunity for people to get back together," she remarked. "I would encourage people to come out, talk to their neighbors and celebrate our community. It's going to be a nice event and a great time for everyone to get together."
